Dr Zoe Gao

Dr Zoe Gao is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with subspecialty interests in cataract surgery, oculoplastics, and strabismus. This includes the management of eyelid cancers and plastic surgery in the periocular region. She is also able to provide care for general ophthalmic conditions including glaucoma and macular degeneration.

She grew up in Hobart and underwent her medical training at the University of Tasmania, graduating with first class honours. She completed a Master of Philosophy in Ophthalmology publishing in peer reviewed journals before commencing ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

Dr Gao was awarded the Gold Medal for Excellence (K. G. Howsam Medal) for being the most outstanding candidate in the final exit examinations across Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Gao subsequently undertook 6 months of fellowship working for the Fred Hollows Foundation Australia in central Australia and the Pacific Eye Institute in Fiji. She then completed a further 12 months of fellowship in Oculoplastic surgery, Paediatric ophthalmology and Strabismus at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in the UK.

Dr Gao has served as chair of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Young Fellows Advisory Group and the Medicare Advisory Committee. She has been on the RANZCO Workforce Committee and the Women in Ophthalmology group. She currently is on the Medical Advisory Committee for Hobart Day Surgery. Alongside her academic qualifications and depth of ophthalmology experience, she is dedicated towards taking the time to build excellent doctor-patient relationships based on empathy, trust, sincerity and respect.
